Chinese enterprises’ construction of Kenya meter-gauge railway project officially started.

Kenyan President Ruto said at the groundbreaking ceremony that the project is a major livelihood project in Kenya. After completion, it will greatly alleviate the traffic congestion problem in southwest Nairobi, provide great convenience for the daily commuting of residents along the route, and help to comprehensively reduce people’s living costs.

It is understood that this project is the first urban commuter railway project undertaken by China Road and Bridge Engineering Co., Ltd. in Kenya. There are four stations in the project line. The main line of the line is about 12.15 km long, and the station line is about 2.42 km long. The contract period of the project is 24 months.

Jiao Xuxue, deputy general manager of China Luqiao Kenya Office, said that this project will strengthen the connection between downtown Nairobi and surrounding areas, promote Nairobi to realize the strategic plan of commuter railway network in 2030, and provide more travel options for local residents. At the same time, the project will help Kenya make full use of existing railway resources and promote Kenya to become a regional transportation hub.

Kenyan Minister of Transport Kipchunba Murkomen said that the project will be part of the 165-kilometer Nairobi commuter railway. The construction of transportation infrastructure can promote the flow of people and create employment opportunities, thus contributing to Kenya’s economic transformation.
